Protecting property rights during wartime: analysis of legal practice

The project includes a free hotline where lawyers provide consultations to people affected by the war on current legal issues.

Recently, the Human Rights Institute, together with the NGO “Housing Institute,” held a conference dedicated to protecting property rights during wartime. The DE-JURE team was represented by partner, attorney, and Doctor of Law Artem Ripenko.

The discussion focused, in particular, on simplifying the process of proving ownership of destroyed property, including property built before 2013 that had not been entered into state registers, as well as on how people affected by the war can obtain compensation. The discussion was based on an analysis of 130 court cases.

— Applying for compensation for damaged or destroyed property requires a comprehensive legal assessment of the circumstances of each individual case, — emphasized Artem Ripenko. — A lawyer should help determine the appropriate course of action and promptly address any potential obstacles in the procedure. Compensation for lost property is one of the most pressing areas of legal protection for people affected by the war.
